At Sundance last week, Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Stricker spoke about the success of his company. What’s Kickstarter you ask?
Kickstarter is a new way for filmmakers, musicians, writers, animators, illustrators and other artists to fund their creative projects. It incorporates an all-or-nothing funding method (if you don’t raise a certain amount of money, you don’t get any for your project).
Kickstarter has a 45% success rate for funding projects. Across all categories, more than 7,000 projects (of all types) have been funded.
In terms of film projects, here are some rough numbers:
– 1,700 successfully funded projects.
– $15 million in pledges so far.
– 3,000 live projects on the site as of this posting.
12 projects have raised more than $100k, six of them films.
